Fredericton is renowned as one of the most preferred travel destinations, its art galleries, historical building's and a wide range of markets, concerts and outdoor theatres. The city's history includes a hotbed for government seats, and today Fredericton thrives as the vibrant capital of New Brunswick. The purpose of this article is to look at those government bodies, both local and federal that have the greatest impact on day to day lives and who is responsible for the maintaining of different laws.

Fredericton Government

The Fredericton Government, or gov nb, is a rather broad term that relates to multiple agencies within the government that are responsible for a wide range of services and protection agencies that are focused on the operation of the province. This includes federal government agencies, provincial agencies and local agencies.

The Office of the Premier

The Office of the Premier has a broad range of responsivities that has the Premier acting to lead the province, sit in parliament, participate in the management of the province, enact/update/create new laws, deal with provincial budgets, finance and many other areas that are key to the provinces growth, stability and independence.

Environment and Local Government

The ministry of Environment and Local Government has a mandate to integrate the management and planning of zoning development, the use of land and issues relating to waste management. In addition to this, they are responsible for compliance and enforcement of laws pertaining to environmental legislative regulations with the purpose to work closely with municipal governments on issues relating to governance.

Local governments govern within their own towns/cities and or regions. The responsibilities they manage are, for the most part, ones that affect people the most in relation to daily lives. This includes local sporting facilities, waste removal, water and sewage, bi-laws and a host of other matters.

Agriculture, Fisheries and Aquaculture

The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Aquaculture in New Brunswick has a wide range of responsibilities. This includes all activities relating to Agriculture, its development in the agri-food market, and also deals with Agriculture insurance and the protection of business/farmers involved in the growth of agriculture products.

They further are responsible for all fishery activities, the governing of laws that relate to fishing, both recreational and professional, and included within their mandate is Aquaculture and its governance.

All educational institutions, whether it be early childhood education, elementary or post education falls under the responsibility of the Minister of Education and Education Ministry. This includes all curriculum mandates, student development and a variety of other areas.

Atlantic Lottery Corporation

All provincial lotteries and gaming establishments are governed by the Atlantic Lottery Corporation. This includes lotteries such as 649m LottoMax, Atlantic49, TAG, and Twist. All casinos that are located in the province such as Grey Rock Casino also fall under the control of the corporation as do bingo charities and others that use lottery style games to generate revenue for special causes.

Tourism and Parks

The Department of Tourism and Parks oversees all activities relating to tourism and parks located within the province of New Brunswick. This includes laws governing parks, attracting tourist to those parks and the up-keep of the parks under its control.
